By joining the society you will have the opportunity to take part in fund raising events and join in with the social events held on the mainland. Membership costs just £15.00 per year. \nFind out more and sign up here.

DESCRIPTION:Flat Holm artists’ book launch poster \nFlat Holm Book artists’ book launch and reading by Chris Scully: Bristol Artists’ Book Event (BABE) \nThe limited edition artists’ book is hand-made by ottoGraphic with poems by Chris Scully about Flat Holm. \nOtto is a well-known international illustrator\, printmaker and book artist. Chris Scully was a summer volunteer on Flat Holm in 2014. \nOtto visited Flat Holm several times during 2014 and collected visual material which he turned into a substantial body of illustrations and screen prints. The poems matched the images\, so Otto decided to make a book with illustrations and poetry. \nThe book is available from Otto’s website: http://www.ottographic.co.uk or you can contact him directly on otto@ottographic.co.uk or 01225 891 581. \nYou can read more of Chris Scully’s poems on his website: http://scullychristopher.blogspot.co.uk and you can contact him directly on chrisscull@googlemail.com or 0780 5261739. \nAn event supported by the Flat Holm Society.

SUMMARY:Talk by Dr. Kirsten McEwan: foraging
DESCRIPTION:One of two sister islands located in the Bristol Channel\, Flat Holm has a strange diversity in flora\, partly due to the sixth century monks\, farmers and the military that once inhabited it. Plants were either deliberately imported to be used for food or medicine\, or accidentally brought in on goods and personnel. \nA Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSPI)\, with maritime sward\, wind-blown scrub and farmed grasslands\, it is one of the few places in Britain where the wild leek and the wild peony grow. \nIn this talk\, Kirsten McEwan will present the plants and fungi found on Flat Holm and discuss their use in food\, medicine and folklore.

SUMMARY:Newport Ship Open Day
DESCRIPTION:The Newport Ship – work inside the coffer dam \nThis may be the last chance to see the Newport ship project for some time as the lease expires on the Ship Centre in autumn 2014. The Newport ship is the most intact 15th century sailing vessel in the world. \nThere is something for everyone\, whether you are interested in sophisticated archaeological reconstruction through digital modelling\, or just the incredible story of how the ship was found and preserved through the 11 years of the project. \nWe have a guided tour for up to 15 people booked at 12 noon. The tour is free\, but you can make an individual donation to the project if you wish. \nThe Newport Wetlands Reserve is just 15 minutes drive away. Weather permitting we can transfer to the Reserve for a light lunch and an afternoon stroll. \nWe propose a car share to reach the Ship Centre where there is plenty of parking on the Maesglas Estate – please let the organiser know if you can take people or need a lift.yourself.
